How to Get Your Wedding Published in a Wedding Magazine or Blog
Seeing your wedding featured in a beautiful wedding magazine or blog is something many couples dream about. It is a wonderful way to have your celebration recognised and to share the story, style and details of your day with a wider audience.
But how do you actually get your wedding published?
What Makes a Wedding Publishable?
A beautiful wedding does not automatically become a publishable wedding. Publications are looking for a story, a strong visual identity and something that feels authentic.
This can come from a beautiful destination, an interesting venue, thoughtful styling, fashion, flowers, stationery, cultural details or simply the genuine connection between the couple and their guests.
The most important thing is that your wedding feels personal. You should never plan your wedding purely for publication.
Your Photographer Can Make a Difference
Your photographer plays an important role in the process.
A wedding submission needs much more than a few beautiful portraits. Publications want to see the complete story, including the venue, details, fashion, ceremony, guests, reception and genuine moments throughout the day.
This is where an editorial photographer can make a real difference. They understand how to create a cohesive collection of images that works not only as a wedding gallery, but also as an editorial story.
For example, The Lane currently asks for at least 30 images for a real wedding submission, with a variety of photographs showing the celebration as a whole.
Does Your Photographer Have Connections?
It can also help to work with a photographer who is already active within the wedding industry.
I am a member of both Wezoree and The Lane, and I actively consider publication when photographing weddings.
Membership does not guarantee that a wedding will be published. Publications have their own editorial standards and ultimately decide which weddings they feature.
However, being part of platforms such as these can create additional opportunities and gives photographers experience with the submission process.
There is also a simple business reason for me to do it. I want my work to be seen. If a wedding has a strong story and beautiful imagery, submitting it for publication is another way to showcase my photography, the couple and the talented team of vendors involved.
What Do You Need for a Wedding Submission?
The exact requirements depend on the publication, but you will usually need:
• A cohesive selection of wedding photographs
• Details about the couple and their wedding
• The venue and location
• Information about the photographer, planner and other vendors
• Details about the dress, flowers, stationery and styling
• A story or description of the wedding
• Permission to use the photographs
It is also important to check whether a publication has any exclusivity requirements before submitting.
Don't Forget the Details
Small details can make a huge difference to an editorial submission.
Invitations, flowers, jewellery, shoes, menus, table settings, architecture, cocktails and personal touches all help create the visual story of a wedding.
This is why I always encourage couples to think about the complete experience rather than focusing only on the ceremony and portraits.
A Few Tips If You Want Your Wedding Published
Choose vendors whose work reflects your style and tell your photographer from the beginning that publication is something you would love.
Create a wedding that has a clear visual identity and feels personal to you. Make sure your photographer documents the entire story, including the details and atmosphere.
Most importantly, choose publications that genuinely fit your wedding.
Getting published is never guaranteed, but having a strong story, beautiful imagery and an experienced creative team can give your wedding the best possible opportunity.
Create a Wedding Worth Remembering
Your wedding should never be designed simply to appear in a magazine.
The weddings that make the strongest editorial stories are usually the ones with personality, emotion and a sense of place.
Create something that feels like you. Choose a photographer who knows how to tell that story beautifully. And if the right publication falls in love with it too, your wedding can become inspiration for couples around the world.
